Ruth Olshan was born in Russia, grew up in Israel and Berlin. She lives in Germany and works as a director, writer an novelist. She studied Film Directing and Film Production in Leeds, UK and Cologne, Germany. Since 2000 she works as a freelance in the film industry and teaches as universities in Germany and abroad.

After having directed several award-winning short films, she directed her first feature „Savannah“ and her first documentary „Like Air To Breathe“, both for cinematic release. She then started working as a script writer and and novelist and directed the documentary „Nicht ganz koscher“ and co-directed „Swimmingpool am Golan“. She received the „Sir Richard Attenborough Award“, the „Award For Female Artist in Nordrhein-Westfalen“, „Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Award“ and some other awards and scholarships. Her films were shown at international festivals such as Venice, Locarno, Munich, Tblissi, Haifa, Berlin, Oberhausen.

Ruth Olshan also works as an script advisor for documentaries and fiction movies and tutor at various universities and institutions in Germany and abroad.
